New Green Bamboo Restaurant & Beer Bar

Great food and very friendly staff. I really enjoyed the curry and the crab dishes - everything was delicious. The portions are generous. A special bonus is the draft beer: fresh, well-kept, and with excellent local varieties that are definitely worth trying.

We visited Green Bamboo Restaurant, first time it was so good that we forgot to take pictures. We ordered grilled chicken and some grilled tuna steak. Chicken was very good, juicy and tasty. Tuna steak was a little bit on a salty side but still very good. Mango juice is very nice. I recommend trying their local beer called Lion, pretty good taste. The vibe is good, they have a nice bar with good variety of alcohol beverages. There is two floors so you can either enjoy sitting next to a bar area or upstairs and watch the street life from the balcony. Service was nice, they took very good care of us. I can for sure recommend!

First off, I’d like to put it out there that all the local “guides” will slate this place. Reason? The owner doesn’t pay a commission to the local desperate tuk tuk drivers - of which there are many. After visiting all the places we allowed ourselves to be dragged to by the locals (see above) we decided that the Green Bamboo actually looked pretty decent - so we gave it a go. Best move of the week. We met the owner as we were having a pre food drink and he’s just an amazingly nice guy. The prices and selection surpassed everything from our first week in Kalutara and it was also used by the locals who clearly loved the place as much as we ended up doing. The food was fantastic and far too much to eat! I took four (huge) king prawns, half a crab and a tiger prawn away in a carrier bag The drinks and dessert selection were also outstanding. The decor was clean and bright and the menus were immaculate. Several places prior to this had really dog eared, greasy, falling apart menus that were frankly, grim to handle. I didn’t get the name of the owner but I’d like to thank him. What a great bar and restaurant you’ve created. This is a family run business that doesn’t allow itself to be dragged into the tourist nonsense that is rife in Sri Lanka. Do yourself a favour and pop in to the Green Bamboo. You’ll be glad that you did. Exemplary.

We visited here four or five times during our two week stay in Sri Lanka and the food here was easily the best we had during our stay. The owner is also the main chef and he took the time to come to our table and make sure we were happy with the food, which was cooked from scratch and plentiful. The Sri Lankan curry was a particular favourite and the owner was kind enough to give us the recipe. My partner was very impressed with the seafood she had here too. Lots of locals eat and drink here and that speaks volumes about the kind of quality place this is. The waiter was also a lovely chap and we hope to see you guys when we visit Sri Lanka again.

Great experience at New Green Bamboo Restaurant! We were staying in Kalutara and wanted to get out of the hotel — this place was the perfect choice. We really enjoyed the beer bar, and the staff were absolutely lovely. The chef — who spent many years working with First Choice before taking over the family business — was brilliant. Top tip: the Guinness is extremely strong!

In 25 days in Sri Lanka, this is the best bar/restaurant I’ve been to so far, quality/price wise. Even the locals pop by for an cold wild one. I got the king prawns, which normally come with salad, rice, and chips (I dispensed of the latter), and a tasty butter sauce. There’s also a few different beers to try. Oh, and they accept cards. Soopadoopa!

I would like to say great respect to the owner of this restaurant. He is a great cook, barman, and just a good guy! The food and dishes in his restaurant are the best in nearest area or even in Kalutara. Prices for food and beverages are not high. Portions are big and delicious, sea food always fresh . If I even return to Sri Lanka, I definitely visit him again.

We are a party of 6 currently holidaying in Kalutara, we were recommended the Green Bamboo, and decided to give it a try, Although staying in a nearby hotel ( all inclusive), we dine out frequently to try and support the local establishments. Amongst the dishes we chose was the fresh fish special for today, baked tuna steak with garlic dressing. Have eaten tuna in many countries of the world and can honestly say, this has to be the best by far. This was washed down by a few cans of the Ryder apple cider 8.8% proof, while the ladies of the group opted for soft drinks, virtually the same as supermarket prices. The hosts and their staff went out of their way to make the visit enjoyable, and even chatted with a few locals to add to the ambience. Will definitely be returning again in the near future. At around £10 per head for meal and drinks, gotta be best value in town ( 19/9/24)
